POSITIONS TABLE

Government Reform

Jury Democracy. Have statistically valid juries of 500+ randomly selected citizens make all important decisions of government after hearing full debate and information from all sides on a single issue or proposal.  See McTavish4MN.org to learn more.

Hugh McTavish, Independence-Alliance

Supports.  It is my original idea and the core reason for my campaign.  I think it will transform government.  We will be making policy based on reason and evidence and civil discourse instead of based on money and influence and divisions.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Will Oppose.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Will Oppose.

Will impose his agenda on you if he wins.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

No.  If I win, I will PROPOSE each item of my agenda to a jury representing the citizens of the state..  If the jury votes for it, we will do it; if they vote against it, we will not do it.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Yes.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Yes.

Ranked choice voting

Hugh McTavish,

Tim Walz,

Happiness

Governing with the goal of happiness, not GDP growth.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Supports.  It is my idea.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Never occurred to him.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Never occurred to him.

Tracking happiness, depression, and loneliness as carefully as we currently track economic statistics, so we can aim to improve happiness.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Supports.  It is my idea.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Never occurred to him.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Never occurred to him.

Name tag request.  Replace the mask mandate with a name tag request, a request that we all wear name tags in public that say "Minnesota Nice" as a reminder to live up to that and be nice to one another and that say your first name or whatever name you want to put on it.  My aim is to make it a little easier to meet and interact with people and maybe help you make a new friend.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Supports.  It is my idea.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Opposes, he prefers the mask mandate.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Never occurred to him.

Mandatory walks outside for 15 minutes at the same time once each week, between 3:00 and 4:00 on Thursdays.  (Not really mandatory for people, but mandatory for businesses to give 15 minutes off in this time.)  This will improve our health and mood and help you to meet your neighbors or others and maybe make a new friend.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Supports.  It is my idea.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Never occurred to him.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Never occurred to him.

Police Reform and Public Safety

Ending mandatory arbitration for police officer firings and discipline so police chiefs can fire and discipline bad cops.  I believe this will not only reduce police abuse of civilians but also reduce crime and increase the effectiveness of police because we will have more good cops and fewer bad cops.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Supports.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Opposes.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Opposes.

Environment

Sharing the lands and waters of our state with nature and other species by converting 50% of our land to nature and wilderness.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Supports.  It is my proposal

Tim Walz,

DFL

Will oppose.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Will oppose.

Population: Acknowledging and making an official statement that Minnesota, the U.S., and the world are overpopulated, meaning that the population is above our optimum population for human welfare and the welfare of the natural world.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Supports.  Perhaps the only politician ever to make overpopulation an issue.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Will oppose.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Will oppose.

Line 3 oil pipeline pumping dirty tar sand oil from Canada across Indian lands in Minnesota, against the wishes of the Ashinaabe tribe and contributing massively to global warming.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Opposes.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Supports.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Copper-Nickel mines in northern Minnesota that will leach toxic metals into the Boundary Waters and Lake Superior and other Minnesota waters.

COVID Lockdowns

COVID Lockdowns: Closing schools, churches, restaurants, businesses, ordering us to stay at home for 7 weeks, mask mandates, vaccine mandates and vaccine coercion, promoting vaccinating children and people who have already been infected.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

I oppose all mandatory restrictions.  All evidence indicates they accomplished nothing to reduce COVID cases and deaths but led to an explosion in clinical depression and mental illness, a huge increase in deaths of despair, an increase in crime and murders, threw 16% of workers out of their jobs, destroyed education and childhood for our children and college students, and were a massive and unprecedented infringement on our freedom and personal liberty.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Supported and imposed these lockdowns.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Opposes.

Limiting government power

Governing by executive decree without statutes or the consent of the legislature.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Tim Walz,

DFL

Opposes.

Supports.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Opposes, although one suspects he only opposes it for Tim Walz, not for himself.

Jailing your political opponents like a third world dictator

Scott Jensen wants to jail Steve Simon, the Secretary of State, not for any alleged crime but just because he runs honest elections and refuses to rig the vote for Republicans.

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Tim Walz,

DFL

Oppose.  I think it disqualifies Scott Jensen from holding public office.

Opposes.  He also thinks it disqualifies Scott Jensen from holding public office.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Supports.

Gun Control

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

I support common sense gun control, including banning assualt weapons and universal background checks.  I differ from Tim Walz only in that I would introduce these ideas to a jury by Jury Democracy and I am confident the jury would pass them, and then I would demand the legislature vote on the bill that passed the jury to get this enacted into law.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Supports.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Opposes any gun control legislation.

Abortion

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

I am pro-choice.  I would introduce a bill to make Roe v. Wade the law in Minnesota to a jury and I am confident the jury would pass it.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Pro-choice, but no real plan to enact the right to abortion into state law.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Opposes the right to an abortion.

Control of your body by the government

Hugh McTavish,

Independence-Alliance

Oppose in all cases.

Tim Walz,

DFL

Supports with vaccine mandates and vaccine coercion.

Scott Jensen,

Republican

Supports for pregnant women by outlawing abortion.
